A Stupid Amount of Time at Disney
I spend more time at Disney World in Orlando than I’d like to admit. My daughters are 4 and 2 and they love it. So we go. A lot. It is currently February 19th and we’ve been three times this year. I know the songs. I’ve seen the shows. We watch ALL the movies. Name your favorite Disney movie, I’ve seen it multiple times. In the case of films like Frozen, Moana, and Big Hero 6, I’ve seen them more than 10 times each.
All that being said, I don’t particularly love going to Disney World. I love the joy my girls get from it, but it’s not something I love. So to occupy myself while in the parks I do a lot of people watching. My wife and I used to see if we saw more DC or Marvel comics shirts in any given day. There were a surprisingly large amount of DC attire being worn on Disney property. That’s a rant for another time though.
The Phenomenon
A few months ago I started noticing something very interesting at Disney. There was a sub culture of avid Disney fans that I had never noticed before. They were largely female, 18-23 years old, pale skin, black clothes, fishnets, tattoos, etc. You may think I’m describing me in 2004 and you’d be right, but I’m not. You may also be thinking I’m describing mall goths of the mid 2000’s but also not what I’m after here.
These are what I’ve come to describe as Disney Goths. The one thing I didn’t mention above is that the black clothes are all Disney related clothes. They may be marvel, Star Wars, Disney princess, or (insert your favorite IP here). After I started noticing it I did find that this is not a term that I have come up with. Please don’t get after me on my social media about it. This is a legit thing. Stop what you’re doing right now and google it.
Why?
Ultimately, everyone do what you want and realistically, some people find me a bit odd and the music I listen to strange. So fair enough. Be goth and love Disney if you want. That being said, I truthfully don’t get it. I was under some odd impression that goth culture was very counter culture and was not down with the mainstream. I’m not 100% certain on their views about large corporations, but my assumption is that they aren’t fond of it. That being said, why is Disney and goth culture mixing? Please tell me!! Message me on social, email me, send me a letter. Do something!!!!! I need to understand!!!!!!
In Conclusion
For real, please someone explain it to me. I’ll write something else in the future with my findings, but PLEASE TELL ME!!!!
