Maybe you’ve heard Chasing Airplanes on Spotify or Apple Music. Maybe you saw me on TikTok or instagram, or maybe you stumbled across this blog. No matter the reason I thank you for stopping by and taking the time to read this. As I write this I find myself avoiding work and taking an introspective look at my past, present, and future. That being said, I’d like to share a bit about me so you can know who I am and why this site exists. I don’t suffer from any delusion that I’m overly special or interesting, but I hope you find what I write to be mildly entertaining at the very least. At the very least you’ll find ways to laugh at crazy stuff my kids do in the coming months.
Background
I grew up in southern Mississippi and was raised by incredibly religious parents. “How religious,” you may be asking yourself. My father was a southern baptist minister in the Deep South in small back woods churches. My parents were not and are not bad people, but their lives (and by extension my own) were dictated by what they believed the Bible to teach. When I was 11 they became missionaries in Bosnia. So we packed up and off we went. That is probably a longer story than is warranted here, but it is important to understanding my view of the world. Not only did we need to evangelize stateside, but they felt it was their calling to evangelize the world.
Upon our return to the states we jumped right back into the life of a pastors family. This carried on throughout high school and into college. Needless to say, as is the case with most people, I followed my parents beliefs whole heartedly. As I pursued music in my younger years it was done with an evangelical mind. I viewed music as my means to evangelize those around me. This mindset and behavior led to some destructive tendencies for me and for those around me. My transition out of that belief is a long one that I’m sure I’ll write about soon.
Show Week Prep
However, as Chasing Airplanes prepares to play in Sarasota this weekend I’m reminded of all of this. Much of what I write about now is the pursuit of positivity and joy outside of religion. I hope that message resonates with people who feel trapped within religion. While we are not a preachy band, I do hope something positive comes out of it.
We are playing a five song set these days which brings us to a show time right around 25 minutes. During our run through yesterday I was struck by how effortlessly it has become going through these songs that were stupid hard to learn. That bodes well for us moving forward. I am not entirely sure what to expect from the show in Sarasota, but ultimately we will go hard no matter the venue or crowd size
Recording
We are also in process of recording a full length album. I am stoked about it. The majority of songs have been written already and we are just getting them finely tuned. We are doing this one ourselves which is both liberating and a little terrifying. The outcome though will be very good. We are incredibly lucky to have a guitarist who is great with audio production. This will save us a lot of money when it comes to producing this thing.
Conclusion
Please give me a follow on instagram, Facebook, TikTok, Spotify, or whatever you hang out on. I look forward to connecting with people and being a part of your life.
